What to wear to your family outdoor photo session

Hi there! I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait for warmer weather! I’m tired of the snow! Today it was 60 degrees and sunny and had me thinking of beautiful Spring evenings.

It also got me excited for upcoming Spring sessions when the evenings are longer and I can visualize my clients in a beautiful sun-drenched field having a fun time with their kiddos.

I often get the question of what to wear? Well, gone are the days of everyone wearing the same color shirt and jeans (no!). You want to pick clothing that has a continuity through all family members but isn’t too matchy-matchy.

Here are some tips for you:

  1. Pick two colors (for example, peachy pastel and soft blues). I have to say, blue looks great one everyone. It really does. While mom wears a beautiful solid peachy flowy dress, dad can be in khaki shorts and a blue gingham button down. Daughter can be in a white sun dress and son in jeans or khakis and a navy golf shirt.

2. Solid colors work best. You don’t want to take away from your images with loud and distracting patterns.

3. This is your photo shoot! Dress it up! You’re investing in your family photos. Definitely dress it up! You want to look polished and crisp. Dressing it up gives your images that extra special touch.

4. Layers are everything. Think of your shoot like a catalog. For men, button down shirts look great with a sweater and jeans. Ladies look great in dresses or if you’re going with jeans, polish it up with a nice sweater and quilted vest, and knee high boots.

5. Don’t wait too long to pull outfits together. All too often I have clients who are scrambling at the last minute to find something for their kids to wear from Target at the 11th hour. Don’t wait. Pick your colors and start researching. Places I recommend: J.Crew for the whole family, Brooks Brothers for men, Talbots or Tuckernuck for ladies, Janie and Jack, Land’s End, Zara and Trotters UK for your kiddos. If you need to shop your closet and you’re not sure how to put outfits together, that’s what I’m here for.
